Bashir & Seema Janjua

Bashir and Seema Janjua are none other than the brains behind Marlborough Place Assisted Living Homes. The duo have built their lives based on ambition, hard work and compassion, and they have strived to be successful partners, parents, entrepreneurs, and care-givers through every step of the way.

Bashir comes from a Pakistani background, but he was born in Nairobi, Kenya and grew up in the neighbouring country of Uganda. Seema is from a small Portuguese island called Madeira. The two met and married in England, where their journey as business owners also began when they owned a small convenience store. Their children, Zee and Naz were both born in England before they immigrated to Canada in 1987.

Bashir worked with one of his elder brothers in his law firm in Toronto for a few years, before relocating the family to North Lancaster to work with another one of his brothers in chicken farming. After 9 years of working in chicken farming, Bashir and Seema decided they needed a change. Their dream of owning their own business once again was at the forefront in their minds.

Bashir and Seema wanted to purchase the right business for them and their family, and one that would fulfill their desire to help people. After a long search, they had a fateful encounter with a prominent Cornwall real-estate agent named Jack Roy.

Jack showed Bashir and Seema 119 Marlborough Street; the future location of Marlborough Place I.   Jack had owned a rest and retirement home of his own years earlier, and after getting to know Bashir and Seema and hear their business interests, he felt that a care home would be a perfect fit for them. He shared his knowledge of the business, and more importantly, his encouragement and faith in their success. It was from the purchase of this first building in 2001 that “Marlborough Place Homes” was conceived.

Six months of renovations ensued during which both parents and children worked hard replacing flooring, installing a new kitchen and bathrooms, furnishing rooms, and painting every nook and cranny of the 6,000 sq. ft. building. The project was finally completed and saw its first resident on April 1st of 2002.

As the business grew, Bashir was determined to expand and had his eye set on the beautiful red brick building nearby. It wasn’t until 2006, that his dream became a reality. The red brick house across the way was to become Marlborough Place II Seniors Residence.

Bashir and Seema worked very hard throughout the years to create their two beautiful homes, but they felt that they were not ready to stop there. They eventually started their search for a third building, and after a couple of years, the Janjua family decided to expand Marlborough Place into Casselman, Ontario in 2013.

From the very first resident at Marlborough Place I, Bashir and Seema realized just how much they loved what they were doing. Not only was their success a confirmation of their devotion to their business, but the positive feedback they received from members of the community, from residents’ relatives and from residents themselves best illustrated their genuine care for the people they served.

They very much look forward to embarking on their new journey with Marlborough Place IV in Long Sault and cannot wait to tell everyone more about it!

Zee Janjua

Zee is the son of Bashir and Seema Janjua. From the moment the idea of starting Marlborough Place surfaced, Zee took interest and has been very involved and hands on. Throughout his last year of high-school, he worked part-time while living with his family at the residence as the tenancy grew.

After graduation, he went on to complete a degree in Information Technology from Carleton University. During the summers, he would return to Cornwall and work full-time with his parents at the residence. Despite his degree not having anything to do with the family business, Zee learned early on that he had a knack for the business and could excel and perhaps take Marlborough Place to the next level. By the time Marlborough Place II was established, Zee knew that he definitely wanted to continue to grow the brand and promote the values that Marlborough Place holds.

In 2010, after meeting the expectations and standards set by his parents, Zee took on the main responsibilities of the business and has not looked back since. He was integral in the acquisition of Marlborough Place III and hopes to be the same for the newest project; the complete retrofitting of a school in the town of Long Sault scheduled to be completed in early 2021.

Zee loves people and makes sure to build one-to-one relationships with each resident and hopes to continue that in the future. Zee also loves BMW, the Toronto Maple Leafs, long drives in the countryside, making people laugh and travelling.

Naz Janjua

Naz is the daughter of Bashir and Seema Janjua. She started at Marlborough Place right from the very beginning in 2001 when Marlborough Place I  was purchased.

She has worked alongside her parents and older brother Zee, to create a warm, loving and safe environment for people who need assistance in their day-to-day living. She has worked on renovations in each of the three homes, and for the last six years has been in charge of payroll and other accounting tasks. Since its purchase in 2013, she specifically oversees operations at Marlborough Place III.

Naz is an outgoing individual who loves to spend time with friends and family. She loves to cook and considers herself lucky to be able to try out many recipes for the residents! Naz is an adventure seeker and travelling is another one of her passions.

Anita Barque

Anita has been with Marlborough Place for 7 years tending to the Seniors Residence.  Always smiling and laughing, Anita treats the residence as if it were her own home. This tidy lady loves to clean and cook new recipes for the residents. She also loves to work on any home improvement projects she can get her hands on.

Anita always comes to work ready to learn something new about the residents. Her favourite part of her job is having the opportunity to grow, to become more compassionate and understanding of people’s needs.

On her free time, Anita enjoys decorating, camping, bicycling, and spending time with her family and friends.

Karen is sweet, soft-spoken and patient and loves helping people any way she can.

On her spare time, this movie-buff loves to relax at home.

Sheila Trudell

Having been with the business for 12 years now, Sheila is the longest standing Marlborough Place employee (other than the owners of course)!

Sheila started working for Marlborough Place after 30 years in the sewing business. Aiming for a change of pace in her work life and looking for new experiences, this crafty lady took a leap of faith and applied to work at the senior’s residence… and she never looked back!

What Sheila loves most about her job is being able to socialize with the residents and; although she had little experience in cooking at the start, she now enjoys cooking nice meals for the residents.

On her well-deserved days off, Sheila spends her time shopping, reading and being with her husband, children, and grand-children.
